We recommend placing the safe so that the top of the sleeve cap is 6"-12" below the ground's surface. Since the safe sleeve and cap are 17.5" long, we suggest a 23.5 " to 29.5" deep hole will do nicely. In other words, a hole that's vertical two-and-a-half feet (maximum) or two feet (minimum) will work fine.

The safe construction from the most resilient ABS plastics and stainless steel can hold significant weight. However, that’s not the point. We recommend only putting in as much weight as you can lift out - maximum 25 lbs.

If this is genuinely a worry to you, the top of the safe should be at least one foot (12”) below the surface, not the low end of our recommended range (6”). Why? Traditional metal detectors reach 6” to 10” below the surface. Irrespective, we provide “salting” metals with our safes that rely on the user scattering these around as directed, a few inches below the surface in the DirtyMan Safes vicinity. By following these instructions, you successfully confuse most criminally guided metal detectors.

The safe before submersion is as vulnerable to fire and water as any high-grade plastic or steel material. The relevant question is this: How vulnerable are DirtyMan containers to these elemental threats underground? Fire cannot corrupt or penetrate the earth on top of, under, or around the safe, making it effectively fireproof once submerged as directed (i.e., between two feet and thirty inches below your garden’s surface). “Wildfire-effects on soil” studies show that earth 2” or more below the surface heats very slowly and remains under 100°C or 212°F. So, at the 6”-12” underground, your assets are safe from a burn threat. Water: The safe mimics today’s underground water ABS plumbing infrastructure. So, as long as you fit it into the prepared hole tightly (leaving no room for movement), it will remain dry and secure.
